The Galveston Symphony is widely acclaimed as one of the best symphonies in the nation among cities the size of Galveston. Richard Pickar, who played with the Houston Symphony, is director of the Galveston orchestra.

Sparky Koerner’s College of the Mainland Jazz Ensemble will add musical diversity to the evening. Koerner, who also plays trumpet for the Galveston Symphony, is one of the better-known jazz musicians in the area.

The program will also recognize Marjorie Jackson Rasche for her lifetime commitment to the musical community. Marjorie is a noted organist with international credentials, plays the violin and viola, and a member of the Galveston symphony. Currently Marjorie is resident organist at Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church; Rasche has served as organist for other churches throughout the Galveston and Houston area and has been organ department head at several universities.
