How We Work

What Can Gleanings From The Harvest Do for Galveston?

  • Gleanings From The Harvest serves as the link between surplus food and organizations that feed hungry people.
  • Gleanings From The Harvest requests, brokers, receives, and warehouses large quantities to conveniently distribute as needed to the local consortium service organizations.
  • Gleanings From The Harvest organizes, packages, notifies and redistributes to any viable group that feeds the hungry in our community.
  • Gleanings From The Harvest is the "one-stop" point for easy drop-off location of surplus food to be properly stored until distribution.

Gleanings From The Harvest cuts through the regulatory maze and efficiently gets surplus food to the groups that distribute it to the hungry. We spend the time finding, acquiring, and storing the food that our local agencies need every day so that they can have an uninterrupted supply of good, nourishing products for those in need – the  children,  the  elderly, the working poor and all those who fall through the cracks of the government’s safety net.

Gleanings works through its membership of interfaith and community organizations committed to ending hunger in Galveston. We don’t require accreditation or tax letters of our members. We simply find the food that’s needed and get it to the providers at little or no cost. It is our mission and our promise to the people of Galveston that we will serve those who serve the needy. We make it our job to see that no one goes hungry here any more.

When you give to us, every member organization in Galveston benefits.  And through them, the needy are well served.

An Example

May 28, 2004, Oak Farms Dairy had 70,000 cartons of milk available.  Through press releases, telephone networking, and word of mouth, we were able to:

  • Raise a volunteer army
  • Notify all partners of the delivery
  • Arrange for unloading/loading of 2 truckloads of fresh milk

Result

  • No charge for milk, or storage
  • No charge for labor
  • No charge for supplies
  • No charge of any kind to consortium partners

70,000 glasses of nutritious milk was delivered to the hungry in Galveston over a long holiday weekend!
